Elco Inboard Electric Boat Motors

Elco's electric boat motors and charging systems are available to
boat builders, dealers, and private owners. They can be specified for
new hulls or retrofitted in most displacement type boats such as classic replicas, deck boats,
dinghies, fishing boats, hunting and duck
boats, launches, rowboats, skiffs, sailboats, work boats,
or most any displacement hull up to 36 ft. in length.
Elco's reliable electric boat motors come in 1/2 (0.5) to 8 HP range with
single and twin (or dual) motor configurations available. The motors can
be installed as a ratio drive with a pulley reduction system and in some
cases as direct drive boat motors to better fit smaller hull spaces. The
boat motors operate from 24 to 72 volts using permanent magnet or
shunt-wound DC motors and include, controllers, side mounted throttles,
and instrument panels combined to provide proven, reliable operation for
years of trouble free, low cost service.
When comparing the requirements for for an electric boat motor to that
of an existing diesel or gasoline engine, a rule of thumb is that an
electric boat motor will be 1/3 to 1/4 the HP of the engine that it is
replacing. Electric boat motors are high torque across the speed range
and do not have the parasitic loads (pumps, gears, etc.) of a gasoline
or diesel engine so the HP required from an electric motor is less.
The individual drive pages provide details on
typical Elco inboard electric drive arrangements, charging power requirements, components and
sizes. Click on the specific size of drive of interest below for additional details.

You Can Cruise All Day
Elco electric boat motors and charging systems provide
up to 50 miles of range or "go all day" on a single charge, depending on
your battery bank, at a cruising speed of four to eight knots.
Recharge overnight and you're ready for another full day's cruising.
Skilled factory representatives assist you in
determining precise power requirements depending on hull drag, propeller
efficiency, loaded weight, cruising speed and range requirement and
battery systems installed.
All electric boat motors are specifically designed for
marine operation and rated for continuous duty, full load operation.
Elco Battery Banks
Elco specified AGM batteries are
fully-sealed, maintenance-free, deep cycle, recombinant gas, featuring
absorbed glass mat (AGM) technology providing up to 1,500 - 50%
depth-of-discharge cycles. The AGM technology was
originally developed for military aircraft where power, weight, safety,
and reliability were paramount considerations, all of which are to the
benefit of ELCO electric drive systems. AGM batteries
are available in BCI group 31, 4D and 8D cases, and may be vertically or
side mounted to simplify installation and accommodate proper weight and
balance distribution.

Elco Charging Systems
Elco specified chargers provide the proper
algorithm to optimize recharging times. When combined with
Elco's control system, they maintain the battery bank in float mode
maximizing performance, reliability, and battery life. Chargers
are available from 15 to 40 amp outputs and can be powered with
standard 110 volt 20 amp or 110/220, 15-50 amp shore power depending on
the size of the charging system. Smaller waterproof chargers are
available for wet boats where a small battery bank or low demand on the
battery bank is present.
For Extended Cruising
 |
Micro-wind turbines or solar panels may also
be used to augment your charging system |
 |
Elco electric boat motors can be made hybrid with
AC onboard generators.
For those requiring extended cruising or or the ability to recharge the
battery bank in remote areas, Elco offers a simple, quiet solution - a
hybrid electric drive system with on-board generator
set.

Over 100 years of reliable service ...
At the end of the last century, electric powered
recreational motor boats outnumbered boats with steam and gasoline combined. While the range and
power of gasoline eventually won out, "electrics" were appreciated and
remembered because they were quiet, clean, simple and inexpensive to
maintain and much easier to start and operate.
Now, as we enter a a new century, Elco,
using new technology, has redesigned and reintroduced quiet, clean
electric motor boats and electric boat motors for boats and sailboats as the
environmental alternative to complicated, noisy, air and water polluting
diesel and gasoline internal combustion engines.
